Why Include a Local Guide in Your Guest Book?

Over the years, my team and I have re-edited the guest books many times based on guest feedback and questions we've noticed. If you're just getting started on your rental property's guest book, check out my blog on what to put in it, here.

One of the most popular sections of my guest book is the local guides, which has information on what to do around town and where to eat. I like to update the local guides as often as I can to include new places I've tried, or switch out activities sections for summer and winter. This is especially useful if you live in an area where there are popular activities seasonally. For example, if there's skiing close by, your winter guide should include how to get to the mountains.

Not sure if you want to include a local guide in your guest book? Here's why you should:

It will make guests feel welcome and enjoy their time in your property

  • Locally curated guides show you guests that you care about their stay and want them to enjoy the area. It adds a personal touch that sets your rental property apart from hotels.
  • Good guides help guests discover hidden gems, which encourages guests to explore like a local, not just a visitor and go to tourist traps.
  • Local guides written can be a big help to first time visitors or international travelers that are unfamiliar with the area.

It increases positive reviews

  • If your guests have fun and enjoy their stay, it can lead to great feedback.
  • Guests often mention things like a great guidebook in reviews. Small touches can go a long way!

How to Make Your Guide More Engaging

  • Keep descriptions short and enthusiastic.
  • Use bullet points or sections to make it easy to scan.
  • Add photos or maps for directions, or include menus of local restaurants. For example, is your local pizza joint a must try? Next time you're grabbing a slice, grab a take out menu and include it in your guide's binder.
  • Update it regularly based on guest feedback or local changes.

What to Include in the Local Guide Section

  • Your favorite local restaurants.
  • Coffee shops, bakeries, and breakfast spots.
  • Attractions, parks, and activities for different traveler types. Try to switch this out for seasonal activities.
  • Local stores, markets, or specialty shops. Especially include places that are open late.
  • Personal tips, for example “go early to beat the crowds” or “this place has the best sunset view.”
